Hello, this is TRAN THI NGOC, owner of NA nail salon.
“Last month they lasted the full month, but this time they lifted after two weeks.” Sound familiar?
How long nails last is not determined by the salon’s technique alone. How you spend your days changes it by a noticeable margin.
Here is the aftercare we would like you to try, along with the habits that shorten the life of a set.
What is a realistic lifespan?
As a baseline, gel nails typically last three to four weeks.
That is an average, and it moves with:
- How fast your nails grow (this varies a lot)
- How often your hands are in water or sanitiser
- The thickness and shape of your nails
- Whether your work is hands-on
When a set lifts after two weeks, the cause is often the environment rather than the application.
Five habits that help
1. Go easy for the first 24 hours
Gel is cured the moment it sets, but it takes a little time to settle fully.
On the day, avoid long baths, saunas and heavy manual work. Heat combined with moisture is a common trigger for lifting at the base.
2. Make moisturising a habit
This has the biggest effect and is the most neglected.
When the boundary between nail and skin dries out, lifting tends to start there. Work nail oil or hand cream into the base of the nail after washing your hands and before bed.
Several times a day is ideal. Many guests tell us this alone changed how long their nails last.
3. Stop using your nails as tools
Peeling off stickers, opening cans, hitting keys with your fingertips — all of these put sharp force on the nail edge.
If you have length extension in particular, simply switching to using the pads of your fingers visibly reduces chips and breaks.
4. Wear gloves for wet work
Prolonged contact with detergent and hot water lets moisture work its way between the gel and the nail.
Use rubber gloves for dishes and cleaning. Your hands will thank you as well.
5. If it lifts, leave it alone
This is the most important one.
Peeling off a lifted edge takes layers of your natural nail with it. That is the single biggest cause of thinning nails.
If lifting bothers you, come in as you are. A set left alone is far easier to repair cleanly than one that has been picked at.
Habits that work against you
| Habit | What it causes |
|---|---|
| Peeling gel off yourself | Layers of nail come away; nails thin |
| Long baths or sauna right after | Lifting from the base |
| Opening things with your nails | Chips, breaks, lifting |
| Skipping moisturiser | Dryness, then lifting at the base |
| Leaving a set until it fails | Breaks that damage the natural nail |
The last one deserves attention. Overgrown nails catch on things, and when they break they can take the natural nail with them.
If nail damage is your concern
For anyone who wants to keep having nails done, there are two options worth knowing:
- Para-gel: a gel that needs no sanding of the nail surface
- Fill-in: refilling only the regrown base instead of removing everything
Combining the two substantially reduces the strain. We explain both in What is the difference between para-gel and fill-in?.
Both are available at NA nail salon — just mention it when you book or arrive.
The best time to re-book
Once the base has grown out by two to three millimetres is the usual signal, which works out to every three to four weeks.
If you are timing it for an event, three to seven days beforehand is the sweet spot. Closer than that and appointments are hard to get; earlier and the base will have grown by the day.
If you have length extension, the tips can be reused two to four times with fill-in. Details are on our Length extension nail page and in your consultation.
Summary
- Go easy for the first 24 hours
- Make moisturising a habit — it has the biggest effect
- Stop using your nails as tools
- Wear gloves for wet work
- Never peel off a lifted edge
None of this is complicated, but done consistently it makes a clear difference.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does gel nail last?
It varies by person, but three to four weeks is typical. How fast your nails grow, how often your hands are in water, and the thickness of your nails all shift that. Booking a fill-in once the base has grown out helps keep them looking their best.
Can I peel off the parts that have lifted?
We do not recommend it. Pulling them off takes layers of your natural nail with them, which is what makes nails thin. If lifting bothers you, come in as you are and leave it to us.
How many days before an event should I book?
Three to seven days before works best. Any closer and appointments are hard to get; any earlier and the base will have grown out by the day itself. For regular re-application, every three to four weeks is the usual rhythm.
When should I apply hand cream?
After washing your hands and before bed are the two that matter most. Working oil or cream into the base of the nail around the cuticle helps prevent the dryness that causes lifting and chipping. Several times a day is ideal.
